techie is the way to be

January 12, 2009

People say I’m very good in computers—when I was in grade 4. I used to go to my mom’s office and play with her computer, learning by myself Wordstar and Lotus 123, among others. I learned no-look typing, but not the proper way. Computers were rare then because they’re insanely expensive. I stopped going to my mom’s office every afternoon, preferring to watch daily cartoon shows, and only had my own PC when I was in 2nd year high school. By then, I already lost my interest in computers and other techie stuff. This was aggravated by the lack of good computer teachers in my high school, teaching MS DOS when Microsoft Office was already the mainstream. Thus, I became semi-computer illiterate. And by the way, I had my e-mail address only when I was in 2nd year college because my professor accepts reports only on e-mails (thank you, sir!) and learned navigating the net only in 3rd year college. I am so behind technology.

Last year, I was almost hired by a large multinational company if only I had background on SEO and some other programs, as the HR manager said. I would have lied that I know these programs if only I’ve heard these words before. I couldn’t fake it. haha. There were also other good opportunities that I missed because of lack of IT experience. Web is the future, with a strong presence now.

With all these said, I realize that I should equip myself with IT knowledge. I envy those people who know a whole lot about web developing, Java, C++, and other programs that I only know by name. I think these people are cool, wearing USB necklace and bringing their laptops and superiority everywhere. If I could self-study, I would, but it seems too complex for me. Hence, I decided that I should take a short course on web developing (do tell if you know a good school). It’ll be good for my brain and, more importantly, for my resume. haha.

“bringing their laptops and *superiority* everywhere”
Could be posers, you know. Hahaha.
Last year din, may nag-interview sa akin, and medyo naramdaman ko na end of conversation na iyon nung tanungin nya ako tungkol sa SEO and although I know what it means, I still don’t have anything to fake it with.
(Let me just clarify na hindi ako ang nag-solicit ng interview ha? Hehehe, my current employer is a blogger and might stumble here, read this, and think I’m planning on leaving. Di po.)

Posted by TPS at January 15, 2009, 5:26 am

the employer also asked me about SEO, and well, i just told him i know what it stands for but that’s it. haha!

hi mordsith!

tnx for droppin by my blog. you really got a great blog here. :D i had my interest with computers when i was in grade 3. we were just playing with garfield comic strips at school. we also had our first desktop PC when i was in Grade 5 when my sister took up a course in Com Sci. you are right that computers that time are really expensive. We bought ours for around 50K and it only has a floppy, 1GB hard disk, 16MB RAM and Pentium 2 for the processor. I also get to familiarize myself with early programming applications like GWBasic, Turbo Pascal and C. I never let go of this interest and I pursued it in college.

Just don’t get demoralized if you haven’t learned enough. As what I have told my students (yes! i am a professor in an IT field ^_^ ), there’s always enough room for learning, all it takes is one’s determination and patience. That’s why I even chose a mentoring career than working in an IT company, as of now, because I believe I haven’t learned enough and I want to learn more about IT. This career helps me hit 2 birds with 1 stone. I get to do my job as a teacher and at a the same time I get to learn along with my students. :D

so never lose hope. the World Wide Web is vast, all it takes is patience to breeze through necessary information you wanna learn. i’m wishing you luck! and let’s pray that Sony won’t cut off their game division. long live the gamers! hehe. :D

ps. sorry for this long comment. I got too emotional. hehehe. tnx for droppin by my blog again. :D
