carpe diem? maybe not!
September 1, 2008I like Dead Poets Society. It’s a great movie. Good acting, good actors, quotable lines, poetry, embracing yourself, following your dream, the idealism—I love it. But this is not about the movie; this is about the phrase that I first heard from the movie: carpe diem.
I like the idea. Seizing the day. It’s appealing to me. From then on, I’ve heard the idea so many times uttered using different words, tones, and faces. Really, if I could do that, that would be great.
There are so many things I want to do, but so many things I have to do first. Trying to make most of my life when I simply can’t YET is very stressful and tiring. And most enjoyable things require spending money and time, which I do not have right now. I must admit though, I haven’t done really fun stuff for years now. My life was sucked out of me, and life begins to suck. Haha. Maybe I think it does because of this carpe diem thing; I just cannot do it.
But then, my life does not suck. I like spending Sundays lying in bed all day and watching TV. I like resting at weeknights after work. I never want to force myself doing things when all I want to do is to sleep. Wanting to achieve things in a short time can be really depressing. So, I’ll just wait for my time. It will come. No pressure.
Then, I’ll seize my day!

amen!
– this phrase also reminds me of a musical number in “Newsies”
Posted by onyxx at September 2, 2008, 3:18 amAfter all the carpe diem, we need to relax also and replenish all the lost energy (and especially money) we spent “carpe dieming”.
As they say, we need a vacation to recover from the vacation.
Carpe diem does not mean exhausting yourself just so you can really say you seized the day. I like your idea of “seizing the day” at your own pace. And just because you’re not doing great things (for yourself) right now that your life sucks, it just means your doing things for others.
What if one’s idea of seizing the day is to use each day to prepare for the future… eternally preparing for an abstract future and enjoying while at it?
“Carpe diem” itself is an abstract word, so one can only do things according to one’s needs and desires at a certain time or moment. Nice post!
tnx, wonks! and yes, things are a matter of perspective.
Had I watched Dead Poets Society when I was younger (in high school or college maybe), that would probably be one of my most favorite movies of all time. I dunno, I love poetry as ferociously as I can love any thing in life, but the film didn’t really sit right with me.
Anyways, that’s just me. And how many Sundays have I spent just lying in bed and watching TV? Countless! It makes me happy (relatively) and contented. So who’s to say that’s not “seizing the day”?
:)
they say, the secret to happiness is contentment. maybe they’re right. maybe.
ahh… sunday afternoon, watching tv, just lying down, eating pancit canton. ha!
mordsith, it’s just a matter of time.
i love dead poets society too, bought a stationery set with the movie poster on it, bought the paperback from the 2nd hand shop, and wrote carpe diem to everything i had before.
now, the writing phase is over, because i’m “living” it.
just take it easy, lazy days are also nice.
reaaally nice.
i’m glad you’re living it now. hope i can do the same soon.
hey, i’ll link you up. hope you don’t mind.
